Since Alex was tiny we noticed that he was turning in on his feet and mentioned it at his developmentals.. they assured us that this was quite common and would probably rectify itself and if it didn't they would look at it a bit further down the line...
As time went by we felt it was worse instead of getting better and we also began to notice that he was very 'flat-footed'...Having mentioned it again and being told that he 'would be seen' shortly and the waiting turned into months I just decided to make an appointment with a podiatrist here in town...
And sure enough as soon as I did the 'call' came soon after so we decided to cancel the appointment I had made and Declan brought Alex to the health clinic and was given orthotics for his shoes and told 'he will be grand'!!!
We followed instructions to the letter building up each day the length of time he was wearing the orthotics...but if anything we felt his 'crooked' feet looked even more pronounced and Marie, ever vigiliant noticed that every day that she picked him up from naoínra the first thing he did when he came in was to discard his shoes....and we noticed that they were cutting into his arches and really hurting him hence the more pronounced walk as he was trying to avoid the orthotics making contact with his feet.!!!
We discarded them that day and remade an appointment with the podiatrist.......
He was finally seen last week and after a very thorough examination lasting almost 50 minutes he said all his problems with his feet were coming from... his hips.... which were inward turning...more than likely caused by his prematurity and quite likely genetic...and it is when something like this goes undiagnosed it is then you are looking at hip replacements down the line... He asked had he pain and thankfully he doesn't...
The solution... well there is no quick solution or sure solution but apart from getting him special insoles and special shoes we have to get him to do daily exercises, and he also recommended this......
....for at least 10 minutes every day......
It was recommended that he stay really active... maybe try rollerblading, iceskating, horseriding as these would be especially good for his hips....Well so far we have bought the 'hoppers', done the exercises and as for the pony riding Alex, knowing about the downturn in the economy has taken this one onboard himself.... this is what we have found him doing with poor patient Jacko.....!!
Stay still Jacko...
Watch this Dad...
These two are great friends.....

His remedy don't seem too painful or difficult....Ha
Yes Adrienne,I have read about Alex with Interest. You and Declan are doing all you can. He is healthy for a start. I imagine that pretty soon Alex may get quite aware of walking 'style' and discontinue the floppy steps he seems to take. No doubt you will continue to have contact with the experts in the field etc. He's a good footballer too.
Will see you again soon,A.
Have you investigated a chiropractor - perfect for this.
T

Must ask the podiatrist more questions when we see him Friday.. Got his special shoes today....and a hurley, grip and sliotar which just happened to be at the checkout:)
