We figured that if Santa could brave the elements to be in the Aillwee Caves last Monday we could not let a few icy roads stop us from going.. so we did endeavour to navigate the narrow roads of the Burren...despite the fact that our local radio station kept warning people to avoid all roads near Ballyvaughan as they were a sheet of ice....We took it slowly and Declan was driving so we did make it in one piece and promised to be back home before nightfall...
The bleak landscape of the Burren....a limestone region of approximately 300sq km in the northwest corner of Co. Clare..Not such a good place for farming as the Burren is composed of limestone pavements eroded in distinctive patterns.... Underneath these pavements are huge caves and rivers that flood when it rains... and it rains a lot in this little corner of Ireland... in fact in every little corner of Ireland!! Interesting place to visit... very pretty flora and fauna in the summer....
On our way home it was getting towards dusk and as we inched along cautiously Declan suddenly called my attention to the road ahead... ahead of us on the narrow road were not two but ten cattle spread out in front of us.... As we got closer we noticed that they kept slipping and sliding and were a definite danger and an accident 'waiting to happen'... Declan called the guards to notify them while I attempted to text the local radio so that they could warn motorists.....No new motorway in this part of the country:)))
Not sure how they got there... but thankfully we did not hear of any accident so presume that the local farmer manged to round them up and get them back in to their field or shed....
